Intelligent Teaching and Learning Systems can look back on a tradition of more than 30 years. In these years, different aspects of Teaching and Learning Systems have been studied and explored in several branches of research. Cognitive aspects of learning with such systems, agent technology for learner support, and dialogue techniques as the basis of interaction with the learner are only a few aspects. The aim of this workshop is to discuss the current state of the art and innovative trends in Intelligent Teaching and Learning Systems. The focus of the workshop will be to highlight the role of 'intelligence' in Teaching and Learning Systems. This comprises e.g. the role of methods of Artificial Intelligence in modern Teaching and Learning Systems, how to embed insights of cognitive research in Intelligent Teaching and Learning Systems, 'intelligent' methods to support the learner in such systems, the use of methods of Modelling and Simulation in Intelligent Teaching and Learning Systems etc. These different aspects should be regarded and discussed as well in the retrospective view as in the prospective view. Our goal with this kind of discussion is to delineate a history of Intelligent Teaching and Learning Systems and to extrapolate and explore future trends. Contributions (research paper, work-in-progress paper, survey paper, or position paper) were submitted with respect to either classical or innovative topics.
