Advancing digitalisation is shaping the world of education and requires teachers to have specific digital skills that go beyond traditional didactic core competencies and expand them. Teachers are required to use digital media in a targeted manner in their teaching and at the same time promote students’ digital skills. This article examines how teachers can fulfil these requirements by using the Learning Management System (LMS) ILIAS. As a part of the joint project «DigikoS – Digital Toolbox for competence-oriented self-study», a toolbox was developed to support teachers in a situational and needs-orientated manner. The central question of the article relates to the contents of the toolbox: The aim was to find out, which learning opportunities are necessary to expand the digital skills of teachers for their digitally supported teaching and in the context of using the LMS ILIAS. In addition, the promotion of digital competences and the self-learning skills of students is examined in more detail, as these are essential for successful learning with digital media. For this purpose, the competence requirements are first presented, which are supplemented by experiences from teaching practice. Finally, the contents of the toolbox are derived from these results. The article offers an insight into the complex topic of digital competences in university teaching.
