We argue that the best strategy to resist the enshittification of higher education by the tech oligarchy is refusal. Refuse to use AI chatbots; refuse to accept the AI contracts the administration makes on our behalf; refuse to do the dirty work of AI firms by finding use cases for AI in our classrooms (see, e.g., Sano-Franchini et al., 2024; Drimmer and Nygren, 2025; Guest et al., 2025). Refuse at the risk of appearing recalcitrant, fearful, or antiquarian. Alongside refusal, we should also demand university-wide regulation of AI products and insist that faculty, staff, and students be included in decision-making (i.e.
shared governance).
9 If these strategies fail, unionize and organize (see e.g. Cruz et al., 2023; Irani, 2023; Halperin and Rosner, 2025).
